The Arena del Sole is one of Bologna’s “central” venues. And not only because of its geographical location in the beating heart of the city, but also because—from its construction as an open-air theater in the early 19th century to the present day—it has been the venue of choice for theater companies, artists, and various theatrical forms, distinguishing itself throughout its history by a special relationship between the stage and the citizens.
It is the City of Bologna’s drama theater and one of the venues of the Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione, an organization deeply rooted in the Emilia-Romagna region, of which the City of Bologna itself is a founding member.
Under the management of ERT—one of Italy’s seven National Theaters—the Arena del Sole offers audiences the finest productions on the national scene while continuing to present thought-provoking works that break with convention to showcase the best in theatrical innovation.
As a production theater, it is also a place where artists’ dreams and projects take shape, while remaining open to inspiration drawn from the local community.
